I shall deal in particular with the background of the conjecture which asserts that each elliptic curve over Q (the box of rational numbers) is modular. In different phrases, it's a rational picture of a modular curve X0 (N), or equivalently of its Jacobian style J0 (N). This conjecture is without doubt one of the most vital of the century.

The last words 24 GUINNESS spoken in the Irish Parliament in 1800 by Henry Grattan were in favor of Irish freedom and against the Act of Union. By the late 1780s, it had come time for the oldest of the Guinness boys to think about careers and about how they felt about the issues of the day. Arthur’s oldest son, Hosea, had chosen to become a Protestant minister, but both Arthur Guinness II and Benjamin would join their father at St. James’s Gate. During the Rebellion of 1798, the sons found themselves at odds.
In retrospect, the showdown over the water rights, including the colorful image Arthur Guinness with the pick, is seen as one of the pivotal moments in Guinness history. Indeed, a brewery with no water, or with water too expensive to use, cannot survive. Had he not stood his ground that day, history would have been quite different, and we might live today in a world without the black liquidation with the froth on the top. As we have seen, in his early years at St. James’s Gate, Arthur Guinness concentrated on brewing Irish ale rather than competing for price with English porter, but he was keen to change this situation.
30 GUINNESS As Guinness Extra Superior Porter evolved into Double Stout, and later into Guinness Extra Stout, a weaker variant called Guinness Porter continued to be brewed simultaneously. It would continue as a major product variant until the early twentieth century. Though its importance in the English and Irish market waned, it would remain part of the product portfolio until 1974. As previously noted, Foreign Extra Stout, the product variant that was stronger than Guinness Extra Stout, was—and still is—brewed for overseas markets.
